Order For a Cause!
Percentage Night and Raising Canes Overview
Our group hosted our first percentage night at Raising Canes on October 29th! This was such a great opportunity for us to share about our campaign and meet so many people who were excited to help. Raising Canes is an on-campus restaurant that is very popular amongst many students. They are known for their delicious chicken tenders, fries and toast! We knew this would be a great place to host a percentage night because of the large number of students that go there each night. They are definitely one of the busiest dining options here.
How Did the Percentage Night Work?
Our campaign received 15% of the cost from each order if Hand Up for Women was mentioned. We sat by the line of people waiting to order and passed out flyers for our campaign. These flyers said “Order for a Cause: Help local women get back on their feet and hit the restart button! Hand Up for Women offers a program with classes that teach life skills for them to become self-sufficient. They are ever growing and need our support. We are a group of University of Tennessee students looking to make a difference. We have partnered with Hand Up for Women to raise awareness and funds to change the lives of women in the Knoxville community. Mention ‘Hand Up for Women’ at the register to donate 15% of net sales to this amazing organization.”
Spreading Awareness
We were able to speak with so many different people about the purpose of our campaign and what this percentage of their money would be going towards. Some people quickly brushed us off and were not interested in hearing about our fundraiser, while others were extremely attentive and excited to help out! We each learned how to quickly get our point across and make people more interested in our percentage night. For example, many people started to listen when we said that they would not have to pay anything extra to help. This allowed people to support the cause without having to pay more than they were expecting to! This percentage night was a great chance to spread awareness about Hand Up for Women and what their program has to offer. We educated so many different groups of people on the importance of Hand Up for Women’s program and answered all of their questions.
A Special Mother and Daughter Appearance
One special mother and daughter duo came in who we talked to for a long time. She told us how appreciative she was of what we were doing, and expressed lots of interest in our campaign. She is a University of Tennessee staff member at the Haslam School of Business. She was so excited to hear about students being so involved in the community. She was with her daughter and was excited for her daughter to hear about why we were fundraising and more about where the money is going. I think it was a good teaching moment for her.
Connection and Support
Our percentage night allowed us to connect with so many people in the community, but specifically women. All of the women who came in were so kind and wanted to learn more about our campaign and Hand Up for Women. It was definitely a moment where we were able to connect with other women in the community and represent the support women have for each other. This example of support connects to Hand Up for Women’s program. The program is a bunch of women supporting women where they are able to learn new things together. The women can support each other and lift their program partners up during this difficult time for all of them. The support we felt from so many women at our percentage night can be a small representation of the way women lift each other up in Hand Up for Women’s program.
